Jaswant Singh Rawat was born on 19 August 1941 in Barun village of Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. His father’s name was Mr. Guman Singh Rawat, and his mother’s name was Leela Devi Rawat, he was the eldest of his 4 brothers. His younger brother’s name is Vijay Singh Rawat. The financial condition of his family was not good, so being the eldest son, he decided to go to the army at the age of 17. But due to his low age, his selection in the Army did not happen, then Jaswant Singh Rawat tried his second attempt, but this time he could not be selected, he did not give up and he tried the third time again, this time So luck was with them, 19 August 1960, at the age of 19, he joined the Indian Army. He was selected in 4 Garhwal Rifles.

Battle of Nuranang: Nov 1962

Jaswant’s training was completed on 14 September 1961, after that, ie on 17 November 1962, the Chinese army attacked with the intention of occupying Arunachal Pradesh. At that time the Indian army was neither ready for war nor was there any strategy nor was it more youth nor did he have ammunition to make war. Now when the condition went out of control, the 4th battalion of the Garhwal rifle was sent there. China was attacking India with its full force, the Chinese army was becoming dominant, so the Indian Army recalled the fourth battalion of the Garhwal unit. But Jaswant Singh, Lance Naik Triloki Singh Negi, and Gopal Gosain did not return. These three soldiers wanted to release Chinese machine guns firing from a bunker. The three youths escaped from the firing and reached the Chinese army bunker, and throwing hand grenades from around 15 yards, they killed many soldiers of the enemy army and snatched their machine gun. This changed the direction of the entire battle and the dream of winning China’s Arunachal Pradesh could not be completed. Jaswant Singh Rawat alone killed 300 soldiers of China in 72 hours. This was possible due to his understanding. Because they had deployed rifles at different places of the post and some were firing in such a way that the Chinese army seemed to have full battalions there. Meanwhile, Jaswant’s help was done by two sisters Shaila and Noora. She used to bring food to Jaswant. For 72 hours, the Chinese army did not understand that there was only one soldier fighting with him. Then 3 days later, Noora was captured by Chinese troops and attacked her sister with grenades, both sisters became martyred. To keep such a huge martyrdom alive forever, there are two hills on the last border of India in Nuranang, which are known as Nura and Shaila.

Cause of Death

When Chinese soldiers realized that they were fighting with the same soldier for 3 days, they were also surprised. After which, he cut the head of Jaswant Singh Rawat and took it to China. Then on 20 November 1962, China announced a ceasefire. The Chinese commander returned Jaswant Singh’s head after seeing this bravery of Jaswant Singh, and also presented a statue made of a copper of Jaswant Singh in honor.

Facts

Jaswant Singh Rawat is the only soldier of the Indian Army, who started receiving promotions after death. The first hero than Captain and now he has reached the rank of Major General.

In the place where Jaswant Singh was martyred, a temple has been built in his name, and the statue of Jaswant Singh, given by the Chinese commander in that temple, has been kept. Every person passing through here bows his head in front of them, and even the young men bow before them before going on their duty.

There is a place called Jaswant Garh in Nuranang by their names. This place has been built in his memorial.

Their family members are given their entire salary every month.

On occasions of marriage at home or religious programs, families are given a holiday when they are needed, and as soon as the sanction is received, the army personnel takes their photograph to Pushthani village of Uttarakhand with full military honors.
