Owen Cooper was born on 5 December 2009 (age 15 Years, as of 2024) in Warrington, England. He is a member of the Warrington Rylands U15 football squad and initially aspired to be a footballer. However, he began taking weekly acting lessons at The Drama Mob, a drama school in Manchester co-founded by Coronation Street actress Tina O’Brien and Esther Morgan. He has shared that his interest in acting was sparked after watching Tom Holland in The Impossible (2012), and that his family was supportive of his passion while never being “pushy” during his early drama and acting pursuits.

Career

In March 2025, Cooper made his screen debut as Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old accused of murder, in the Netflix miniseries Adolescence. Series co-creator Stephen Graham had aimed to cast an unknown actor from northern England, and the production team approached Cooper’s drama school to review tapes of their strongest northern actors. Teachers at the school later said that Cooper “just had something,” and after multiple visits from the production team, he was eventually offered the role, selected from over 500 auditions. He filmed the series from July to October 2024, and his performance earned widespread critical acclaim, with the Evening Standard stating it “may be the best debut ever seen by a child actor.” Cooper went on to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the youngest male actor to win an Emmy and the youngest ever nominated in the category. He also won the Gotham TV Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series.

In addition to acting, Cooper appeared in the music video for “Little Bit Closer” by English musician Sam Fender in May 2025. He is set to appear in the upcoming BBC Three series Film Club and has been cast as young Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, scheduled for release in 2026.

A member of the Warrington Rylands U15 football squad, Cooper initially wanted to pursue football but began taking weekly acting lessons at The Drama Mob, a Manchester-based drama school co-founded by Coronation Street actress Tina O’Brien and Esther Morgan.
