Nepal’s first plane hijacking occurred in 1973, during King Mahendra’s rule.

On June 10, 1973, a Royal Nepal Airlines aircraft was hijacked en route from Biratnagar to Kathmandu, with 19 passengers onboard, including Bollywood actress Mala Sinha. This hijacking, masterminded by former PM Girija Prasad Koirala, aimed to fund an armed struggle against the monarchy. Subedi, a close aide of Koirala, had recently been released from jail. The plane was forced to land in Forbesganj, Bihar, and the money was later transported to Darjeeling by car. Subedi and others involved were arrested in Mumbai and jailed for two years, released during the Emergency in 1975.

He spent ten years of his life in exile and two years in an Indian prison for the hijacking, before going on to play a key role in brokering peace talks between the government and Maoist rebels during the 2006 democratic movement.
On 12 September 2025, the Federal Parliament of Nepal was dissolved, and Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim Prime Minister under Article 61 of the Constitution of Nepal. She became the first woman in Nepal’s history to hold the office of Prime Minister.
