Santhy Balachandran was born in Kottayam, Kerala, India. She has lived in different parts of India because her parents had transferable jobs. She later pursued higher studies and earned a postgraduate degree in Anthropology from Oxford University. Alongside academics, she is also an artist who has held six solo exhibitions in different cities and has taken part in several group exhibitions.

Santhy Balachandran began her acting journey in theatre, where she played the lead role in Harold Pinter’s play The Lover, directed by Sanal Aman. After its staging in Kochi, she was approached by director Dominic Arun with an offer to act in his film Tharangam. She also performed in Roshan Mathew’s play A Very Normal Family, where she played the role of Sweety, which further showcased her talent.
Santhy made her feature film debut with Dominic Arun’s fantasy black comedy Tharangam (2017), opposite Tovino Thomas. She played Malini, a bold and independent guest lecturer, which earned her positive reviews for bringing depth to the character. She then starred in Randu Per, a film selected for the International Film Festival of Kerala in 2017, where she portrayed a young woman on the verge of a breakup. The film was later released on OTT platforms in 2021.
In Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Jallikkattu (2018), she stood out as Sophie, the only female character in the film, playing a strong role with her own agenda. She continued to impress with her performance as Linda in Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte (2020), where critics praised her ability to play an impulsive yet natural character. In 2021, she appeared in Aaha alongside Indrajith Sukumaran, where her role as Mary was described as both powerful and graceful.
Santhy later starred opposite Soubin Shahir in Siddharth Bharathan’s fantasy drama Djinn and was also seen in his film Chathuram alongside Swasika, Alencier Ley Lopez, and Roshan Mathew, further establishing her as a versatile performer in Malayalam cinema.
