Gunjan was born in 1975, in an army family. Both his father and brother were in the army, and they also decided to join the army. After completing his schooling, Gunjan went to Delhi to study for graduation, where he took admission in Hansraj College of Delhi University and together she started learning the basics tips of Flying from Safdarjung Flying Club, and after a few months, Gunjan joined the Air Force. After passing the examination of Sashastra Seema Bal, she joined the Indian Air Force as a pilot.

Gunjan Saxena is married to an IAF officer who is a pilot by profession and flies IAF Mi-17 Helicopter. The couple has a daughter Pragya who was born in the year 2004.

Career

In the year 1994, she was inducted into 25 women, whom Indian Air Force selected as the first trainee pilot. She was posted in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. She was waiting for the right opportunity to serve the country, and she also got the opportunity when the Kargil war arises between India and Pakistan in 1999. In this war, Gunjan along with the lieutenant Srividya Rajan carried out the two major operations of the Indian Army “Vijay” and “Operation Safed Sagar”. Gunjan was given the Operation Victory, during the war, she supplied food for the injured Indian soldiers and gave hospitality to the hospital, besides Gunjan was given the responsibility to monitor Pakistan’s position.

Gunjan was blowing a small Cheetah helicopter alone. His helicopter used to reach such a hope, which was not less than any sanitation for injured soldiers and needy companions. But there was another challenge. In that area, Pak soldiers were targeting the bullets and missiles at the sight of the air force choppers and aircraft. There was no weapon in Gunjan’s small cheetah helicopter, In the name of the weapon was INSAS Rifle and Revolver. In spite of this, Gunjan filled many flights in the area of North Kashmir.  They took out many injured soldiers from the Indian Army safely from there. In order to locate the positions of Pak soldiers, they often had to fly very close to the Pakistan border.  In such a situation, Gunjan was attacked directly. The Pak soldiers attacked their aircraft, with a rocket or a shoulder-struck missile. Although he missed his target and explodes on a hill behind Missile Aircraft. Despite all this, Gunjan continued its flight. Gunjan was honored with the Shaurya Chakra gallantry award for this work, and she became the first Indian woman to receive this award.

Because of the work was done by him, Gunjan is also called “Kargil Girl”, As a short service commissioned officer, his tenure ended after seven years. After this, she married the Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter pilot. According to Gunjan, it was his biggest inspiration to bring the injured soldiers safely during the Kargil war. She says that being a helicopter pilot, this is the best thing to do.
